Our development team works hard to keep the Showcase Workshop app ticking along smoothly and looking fresh. If you haven't updated the app since you installed it five years ago — or even six months ago! — you could be missing out on the latest features and bug fixes.

In today's instalment of Questions You Were Afraid to Ask, we dive into exactly how to update your app. Spoiler alert: It's easier than you think.

Updating Your Desktop App

If you're using Showcase Workshop on your Windows or Mac computer, you can check for and install updates directly from the desktop app.

In your app, click the 'Settings' wheel icon in the bottom toolbar.

This will open a dialog box entitled Settings. You'll see two tabs along the top: Workshops and Main. You want the Main tab.

The current version name and number will be displayed at the top of this tab.

If you scroll down a bit, you'll see a section called 'Check for app updates on startup'. If this option is toggled on, the system will scan for updates when you open the app (a maximum of once every 12 hours). This means that, for the most part, you won't have to worry about updating your app — provided this option is switched on.

If you suspect your app is out of date, however, it's worth clicking the 'Check now' button to give it another scan.

The system will scan for updates and, if there are any available, will start downloading them immediately. Once the update has been installed, you'll be prompted to restart the app to finish the installation process.

Updating Your Tablet or Smartphone App

If you're using Showcase Workshop on your tablet or smartphone, you'll need to download and install the latest version from your device's app store.

We've compiled a handy list of the places you can find Showcase over on our website. We've got apps for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS.

Mac OS
Apple App Store
Google Play
Windows

Showcase XE and Showcase for Mac should update automatically, but you may need to check Google Play (for Android) and the Apple App Store (for iOS).

If you suspect your app is out of date, check that the version number in the app store matches the version in the Showcase Workshop app. If the version numbers are different, go to the app store on your device and update the app.

Here's how to do that for each app store:

Apple Store

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Tap 'Today' at the bottom of the screen
  3. Tap your profile picture
  4. Scroll down to see a list of your apps
  5. Tap 'Update' next to the Showcase Workshop app.

Note: You can also search for Showcase Workshop in the app store to update it directly — but you may want to use the above instructions to see if you've got any other apps you need to update!

Google Play

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Tap Menu and select 'My apps and games'
  3. Scroll down your list of apps (or search for Showcase Workshop)
  4. Tap 'Update'.

Using an outdated app can mean you experience more errors and leave you open to security vulnerabilities, which is why we always recommend you use the latest (greatest) version of Showcase Workshop.

If you're having trouble updating your app — or you have a burning question you want us to answer next — give us a shout!
